My Life

I am from Converse
From Fabuloso and Coca-Cola
I am from the small house always rich with smells of food ready to greet you at the front door
I am from sugar cane, the fields stretching across the town I can call home
I’m from watching soccer with my tios and chismeando with my tias
From Luz and Elias
I’m from bare feet and a big family
From “enderezate” and “shouldn't you be asleep”
I’m from las posadas and tamales after church every Sunday
I'm from Garfield, California, El Chante, Jalisco, and enchiladas
From getting stung by an anemone
